What is httpd?

Httpd stands for Hypertext Transfer Protocol Daemon.

Definition: Httpd (Hypertext Transer Protocol Deamon): A web server originally developed at the Swiss Center for Particle Research (CERN) and originally called CERN htpd. Subsequently, httpd was developed independently at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) for UNIX systems. An important innovation in the history of Web servers, NASA httpd introduced forms, clickable imagemaps, authenticationm and key word searches. Most of these features are now taken for granted in other Web servers.
